Giving Thanks To God

On October 3rd, 1789, President George Washington issued a proclamation of a nation-wide day of thanksgiving. He made it clear that the day should be one of prayer and giving thanks to God.

I feel inspired to share the entire text of that proclamation with you today as we prepare to celebrate our day of thanks. It is my prayer, that we, as a nation, and even as a world, can return to regularly acknowledging the hand of God in our lives. I truly believe that happiness comes from following His ways.

General Thanksgiving – A Proclamation

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLIC THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and single favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the single and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;– for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;– for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;– and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;– to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

Signed – George Washington

Worshipping In Your Own Way
There are many who will tell me that I should not be using this space to speak of God. To them, I say thank you for your concern.
There are others who will tell me that believing in God is outdated and old fashioned. I say, thank God that I am old fashioned.
There are more of us, who want to know God. We want to know Him in our own way. We don't want to be told that we are wrong for worshipping Him. We just want to worship Him and to know Him so we can feel His blessings in our lives.
I celebrate the right for each of us to worship God in our own way, and according to the dictates of our consciousness. I am grateful for the many ways in which we can approach Him. Everyone does it differently and I like it that way.
To truly follow His ways, we must be willing to pursue virtue, uprightness, faithfulness, and holiness, which will then lead us to a desire to keep His commandments. We cannot keep all the commandments of God without knowing them, and we cannot expect to know all, or more than we know now unless we comply with or keep those we have already received. Following this path leads to greater happiness
Happy Thanksgiving
I wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving. I invite each of you to gather your families together tomorrow and offer, according to your own traditions and customs, a prayer of thanksgiving to your God. I am a witness of the goodness of God. I know that when we let Him into our lives, he blesses us and we enjoy the blessings of happiness. May God bless you and yours.
